Iron Man 3- PG13

Well, I'm back! Yeah, it's been over a year, but lets see if we can get back into this. I think I'm going to structure things differently. Well, anyway, here we go!
Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a great fan of The Avengers. LOVE that stuff! Therefore, I was pretty excited to see Iron Man 3. Everyone loves Iron Man! He's hilarious and awesome! Here's what it was about.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is struggling to adjust to life after his adventure with The Avengers. He is having some serious PTSD, and can't sleep. He also has crippling panic attacks, which can strike at any time. Despite this, a new threat arises. A terrorist called, The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), who knows no bounds. Stark finds his personal life destroyed by this new villain and vows revenge. He finds himself, and his friends, being attacked by mysterious people who glow red, can burn you, and occasionally explode. Stark is pushed to the edge, and must rely on his own ingenuity and resourcefulness in order to protect what he cares about most.
Well, as usual, Robert Downey Jr. did not fail us. He had some great snappy one-liners and was a very sympathetic character during his struggles. Ben Kingsley also does a great job. This movie, unlike the previous Iron Man installments, has a lot of Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Tony's girlfriend, Pepper. She kind of steps it up in this movie, making more of a name for herself. She does some pretty intense stuff! Througout the movie there were several references to The Avengers, which I really liked. This movie was just really fun! There were a lot of people who loved this movie, including critics. However, I didn't love it. I thought it was a typical superhero movie with a lot of explosions. I felt it didn't do much to separate itself from other movies in the genre. I mean, it wasn't bad, it was just average. There were a few plot twists at the end that I really didn't know how to feel about. And judging by the response in the theater, I wasn't alone. A lot of people really didn't like the twist, others felt it was a good resolution. There were also a lot of plot holes, and I actually found myself getting tired of the movie and just waiting it for the end.
Okay, this doesn't sound like a good review. Really, though, it was okay. Just not spectacular. I also have a hard time with how women in the Iron Man franchise are portrayed. Things like that can ruin a whole movie for me, but that's just my pet peeve.
This movie is rated PG-13 for intense action violence throughout. A lot of people get killed in ways that are quite violent. Also, for some suggestive content, which you will find in any one of the Iron Man movies. However, I found that there was a bit more in this one.
Now the tough part! How old should kids be to see it? This is hard, because lots of parents like to take their kids to superhero movies, even if they are PG13. I'm going to be liberal today and say 10. BUT only if you think they can handle it. There are things in this movie that would scare the younger me a lot!
I will never dissuade anyone from seeing an Avengers movie. I think you should go see it. Just don't set your expectations too high and you'll like it a lot. Keep in mind that this is the third installment, and for that, they did a decent job.
Oh, and by the way, are The Avengers the most useless superhero friends ever? Okay, I know they couldn't come in or it would've just been Avengers 2, but seriously, folks.

  1. Good review Maddie. Following the Avengers is hard to pull off, but at least this movie does it quite well.
